Mitochondrial DNA - the powerhouse of cellular life
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is the small circular chromosome found inside mitochondria, the powerhouses of eukaryotic cells. Unlike nuclear DNA inherited from both parents, mitochondrial DNA passes exclusively through the maternal line, making it invaluable for tracing evolutionary lineages and human migration patterns. Each mitochondrion contains 2-10 copies of its genome, encoding 37 genes essential for cellular respiration and energy production.
Recent breakthroughs in mtDNA editing offer promising therapeutic avenues for treating previously incurable mitochondrial diseases.
